The Limburg amusement park Sprookjesbos Valkenburg has been fined following an accident. In May 2022, three people were injured when a gondola of the 10-meter high balloon carousel Calidius fell during a ride. After an extensive investigation, the Public Prosecution Service finds the park guilty of grievous bodily harm due to negligence.

Moreover, according to the judiciary, the duty of care with regard to the maintenance of the attraction was not fulfilled. However, the fine is minor: only 6 euros must be paid. According to the Public Prosecution Service, that amount is related to the special circumstances surrounding the incident.

It took a while before the Belgian victims – one adult and two children – held the amusement park liable. When that happened, the Fairytale Forest was already bankrupt. By imposing a minimum fine, guilt can at least be determined and the insurance company can be contacted.

Reopening
Other attractions of the same type have had modifications made to prevent accidents. Calidius has been closed since the incident. The new Fairytale Forest management wants to remove the balloon tower. We are currently working towards a reopening in July.
