BOSSCHENHOOFD/BREDA – The man who caused an accident that caused four deaths in Oud Gastel must go to prison for 4 years. This is what the court in Breda ruled. “But no punishment can take away the loss of loved ones.” The accident killed mothers Wieteke and Regina and children Anke (10) and Erik (8) from Bosschenhoofd.

The accident occurred in September 2022, during the last weekend of the school holidays. The mothers went with their children to a restaurant in Oud Gastel. “We’re coming,” was Regina’s last text.

They would never make it to the restaurant. While crossing the Roosendaalsebaan they were hit hard by a Mercedes. There were five of them in the car: one girl (9) survived the impact.

Behind the wheel of the Mercedes with a German license plate was Roosendaler Omar E., who drove more than 150 km per hour. The speed limit on that road is 50 km per hour. The Public Prosecution Service prosecuted E. for reckless driving and had previously demanded 8 years in prison.

Omar E. (28) was not present at the verdict on Friday afternoon. His lawyer was also not there. However, there were many relatives of the victims in court.

“Deliberately and ruthlessly he stepped on the accelerator. They had no chance to anticipate his behavior,” the public prosecutor said at the hearing last week. “The victims were driven off the road with the force of a tank. The suspect drove recklessly and selfishly and unfortunately the lives of Anke, Regina, Wieteke and Erik came to an end. They didn’t stand a chance. This causes a lot of sadness, but also anger and powerlessness.”

‘Sincere apologies’

The accident led to ‘intense sadness’ within Bosschenhoofd. One large guard of honor was formed in the village during the funeral. There is now also a memorial monument.

Omar E. stated at the hearing: “I would like to sincerely apologize and say that I am sorry. I should never have driven so fast.” His lawyer Yehudi Moszkowicz pointed out that the mothers and children were crossing a major road in their car. “My client was undeniably driving on a priority road. That it was a priority road was known to all drivers based on traffic signs and shark teeth.”

The Roosendaler has several traffic violations to his name, both at home and abroad. Moszkowicz: “My client is not a saint in traffic. But he doesn’t do road piracy. He is not guilty of drinking. Yes, he drove too fast, but for a very short time.” Omar E. was already in jail, but for a different case. He is also a suspect in a drug case.
