A walk past nine squares, delicacies, flowers, music, food and lots of butterflies: that was King’s Day in Emmen. We look back on some of the best moments!
Emmen
A special day in the city of Emmen! For the first time in more than twenty years, it was up to a Drenthe city to welcome the royal party today. The last time, in 2002, took place in Hoogeveen and Meppel. That was also the first time that our current queen Maxima was part of the party.
Today must have been very special for the queen, as she returned to the province 22 years later where she experienced her first with a new title and three beautiful daughters by her side.
The outfits
Naturally, there was great anticipation for the outfits worn by the queen and princesses Amalia, Alexia, and Ariane would wear today. Fortunately, lovers of royal fashion were not disappointed!
For example, Their Royal Highnesses Queen Máxima and Princess Amalia both dressed in green. The queen wore a dress from the Belgian fashion house Nathanand the crown princess chose a cheerful dress from Ba&sh. Both also paid a beautiful tribute to Emmen, with butterfly accessories in their hair. Emmen is also known as the ‘Butterfly City’, thanks to the history of the famous animal park in the city.
Princesses Alexia and Ariane dressed in warm tones: for example, the second daughter of the royal couple combined a white Sezane-dress with a red-brown coat and a set of sturdy boots. The youngest of the couple showed herself to be a young adult princess in a matching suit Max Mara.
The activities
During their visit to the city, the group walked past nine ‘squares’, each highlighting a facet of the city of Drenthe. From sports and games to singing and dancing, there was plenty of fun. Naturally, the Oranjes were invited to participate in the activities themselves. And they gratefully took advantage of that.
We chatted with those present, tasted local delicacies, drew, kicked a ball and posed for the necessary selfies with the enthusiastic audience. The entire group also enthusiastically took part in a quiz about the region, with the team led by Queen Maxima eventually walked away with the win. The entire company also committed itself to handing out pieces of a gigantic tompouce to the crowd present.
‘Could do less’
During the closing point of the program, the king shared that he had had a wonderful day. According to the monarch, there is no truth in the polls and polls in which the municipality regularly scores poorly.
He stated: “Emmen is a very strong city. When it’s good, they say here: ‘it could have been done less’. Well, Emmen, it could have been done much less!”
The Butterfly City has put the region nicely on the map. Hopefully they won’t have to wait another 22 years for their next visit.
