On Friday, 78 tornadoes were recorded, mainly in the states of Iowa and Nebraska. Another 35 were counted Saturday from northern Texas to Missouri.

Four deaths have been reported in the state of Oklahoma, Governor Kevin Stitt confirmed on Sunday. At least two people, including a four-month-old baby, were killed in the city of Holdenville in that state. Further debris was cleared on Sunday.

Photos and videos from the town of Sulfur, about 60 miles from Holdenville, show a trail of destruction and devastation. A woman died in that hard-hit city. Elsewhere in Oklahoma, a fourth death occurred on the highway in Marietta.

Without power

The governor of Oklahoma has declared a 30-day state of emergency. More than 30,000 homes in Oklahoma and more than 50,000 in Texas were without power.

The fifth victim occurred in Iowa: a man succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

Tornadoes are quite common in the US, mainly in the center and south of the country. According to meteorologists, it is very unusual for large tornadoes to occur so quickly.
