The BBC seems to be quite pleased with Joost Klein’s song. “I have four syllables to summarize the entire evening: Eu-ro-pa-pa,” the broadcaster writes with images of the Dutch act.

‘Wonderfully stupid’

The British newspaper The Guardian is also enthusiastic about the ‘gabber-infused’ song, although this is mainly because the 26-year-old sings in Dutch. According to the newspaper, the time when only English-language numbers have a chance of winning is over.

Not all British media think this way. The Daily Mail calls it an ‘irrelevant and stupid’ number. The Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet also finds it ‘wonderfully stupid’. “The whole of Europe fits in those shoulder pads,” says the article above.

Our southern neighbors are somewhat positive about Klein’s performance. “With his bright blue suit (…) Joost knows how to keep the attention,” writes VRT.

‘No stranger in Germany’

The German newspaper Bild also praises ‘the rapping Dutchman with his pounding beats’. The Germans find the musician with XXL shoulder pads a visual eye-catcher. He is ‘no stranger to Germany’, the newspaper writes. The Dutchman made his breakthrough last summer with ‘Friesenjung’.

This is how Joost Klein himself reacted last night to getting the final place:

The French newspaper Le Parisien praises Klein’s ‘Dutch ode to Europe’. “The song even refers to Stromea. It may not be the hit of the summer, but he manages to refer to European politics in a playful way on the eve of the European elections,” the newspaper writes. “Europe!”

‘Mission accomplished’

According to the Belgian Nieuwsblad, it could hardly have been otherwise: ‘for Joost it was half a home game’. “With the clear tribute to his deceased father, he also managed to move the audience at the end. Mission accomplished.”
