To say that 2024 hasn’t had a great box office start might be a bit of an understatement. We’re currently a third of the way through the calendar year and only three films have surpassed the $500 million mark.

In fact, only three films have surpassed the $200 million mark, aside from Dune: Part Two with over $704 million, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire with around $520 million, and now Kung Fu Panda 4 with $503 million , no other film has generated more money from ticket sales than Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire and its $188 million performance.

But that’s right, Kung Fu Panda 4 has now surpassed the half-billion dollar mark at the box office, making it one of the biggest films of the year. Considering that Godzilla x Kong debuted around the same time as Kung Fu Panda 4, it will be a tight race to see which film comes out on top when they end their theatrical runs.

For reference on how poorly the box office seems to be doing so far this year, only eight films in total have climbed above $100 million, with the eighth being the very poorly received Madame Web which clocked just above $100 million. 2023 managed to deliver a total of 50 $100 million earners, which as a general reference point would mean it averaged just over 16 $100 million films every four months, something 2024 has managed to deliver only half of so far.

Thanks, Box Office Mojo.
