Tim Overdiek is a writer and therapeutic coach. He was a journalist for many years. His latest book Silent fathers is about the many Dutch men who were forced to work in Germany during the Second World War. They prefer not to talk about what exactly that was like.

About the book Silent Fathers

Hundreds of thousands of Dutch men were forced to work in Germany during the Second World War. This Arbeitseinsatz was a crucial and ruthless way to keep the war going. Most later remained silent about what they had experienced. It is still an underexposed chapter in Dutch war history.

Tim Overdiek’s father was also such a forced laborer. He also refused to talk about his time in Germany until his death. It had been traumatic, that much was clear. But he never talked about what exactly happened. In this book, after a long search, Overdiek unforgettably reconstructs the fate of his father and the people around him, who left Tilburg for a factory in Krefeld in 1943. It is a final attempt to tell their stories, as a tribute to those very ordinary Dutch boys who ended up in the German war machine.
