Helmond Sport falls through the ice again when it really has to: play-offs out of sight after a blunder in Emmen | Helmond Sports
--

Helmond Sport left it behind again at a time when it really had to happen: the team of interim coach Adrie Bogers lost without a chance 3-0 at FC Emmen on Monday evening. And so the play-offs are out of sight and all in all the season has largely turned out to be a failure.

Would it still happen? Helmond Sport has often had a kind of last chance to reach the play-offs this season. But Monday in Drenthe was really the very, very last opportunity to make something of the season. With a big win over FC Emmen, Helmond Sport could have taken over ninth place, a place that entitles them to the last play-off ticket.

Coach Adrie Bogers and his players were aware of that scenario. In contrast to the away match against MVV a few weeks ago, Helmond Sport now started eagerly. Yet, on the whole, the Helmond team had a hard time with the physical play of FC Emmen, which is simply not the game of this Helmond Sport.

Clumsy action

Initially there was little going on, until Bram van Vlerken committed an awkward foul on the back line in the 10th minute. Bradly van Hoeven went down willingly and was awarded a penalty. Piotr Parzyszek capitalized on that golden opportunity: 1-0. From the kick-off that followed, Anthony van den Hurk appeared alone in front of the FC Emmen goal, but the Helmond Sport striker hit the legs of goalkeeper Eric Oelschlägel.

That was the only serious chance for Helmond Sport in the first half. So it remained 1-0. And with that Helmond Sport came away the best. Because due to careless loss of ball by first Michel Ludwig and then Arno Van Keilegom, the home team from Drenthe had two excellent chances to score, but Helmond Sport stayed alive.

Lack of quality

Helmond Sport also failed to make a fist in the second half. The team tried, but lacks the qualities at the forefront to really compete for the marbles. That is clear after yet another last chance. FC Emmen easily took a 3-0 lead through Patrick Brouwer and Vicente Besuijen.

That’s it. And so Helmond Sport fell through the ice again at a time when it really had to. In theory, the Helmonders can still make it to the play-offs, but in practice it is almost impossible. FC Emmen has four more points with two matches to go. And MVV is also in much better shape than the Helmonders, who will play the derby against FC Eindhoven on Friday.
