Bizarre or tasteless? This app makes a copy of your deceased friend or family member

--

Of course, we’re all a little afraid that AI will become so good that we can no longer distinguish it from the real thing. Usually we are reassured that that will not be the case, this app just goes for it. Vera AI makes a copy of a deceased person so you can talk to them

Death is inevitable, someone is gone forever. You probably wanted to say so much more or you miss the conversations you had. Vera AI responds to that feeling with its app.

Bringing to life

Vera AI wants to bring a deceased person back to life using AI. And they mean so literally that you can have interactions with this person. A promotional photo shows an old lady asking someone how her father is doing. They call it the first chatbot that behaves like a real person.

During onboarding, a number of generic questions are asked about the person you want to turn into a chatbot. After this you can have a conversation with this virtual representation of the deceased person. This shows that the makers behind this app did not think too much about their project. This had to be brought to market quickly to ride the wave of AI.

The artificial man

AI may fit into the picture of people who are looking for eternal life. Instead of [spoileralert] freeze your brain and shoot yourself into space, like Will in The Three Body Problem, other possibilities may lie ahead. Who knows, may say so, but building an app and selling it like that is flat and cheap.

Would you still like to try the app? Then you are too late because the maker has withdrawn the app from the Play Store and the App Store after the fuss.
