The Palestinian journalists covering the Israeli genocide in Gaza have been awarded the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Prize for Press Freedom 2024.

This was announced by UNESCO, the UN organization for education, science and culture. The award was presented on May 2 during the World Conference on Press Freedom in Santiago, Chile.

The international jury of media professionals praised the courage and commitment of Palestinian journalists, who work under dramatic circumstances. Since October 2023, at least 140 journalists and media professionals have been killed in the line of duty in Gaza. The organization is investigating dozens of other cases.

UNESCO supports journalists in Gaza with basic goods, protective equipment and training. The organization also helps media professionals in other conflict areas, such as Ukraine, Sudan, Haiti and Afghanistan, with safe work spaces, emergency subsidies and independent media.

The UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize was established in 1997 to honor journalists who work for press freedom, especially in difficult circumstances.
The prize is named after Guillermo Cano Isaza, a Colombian journalist who was murdered in 1986.
