Mondiale Werken Lier nominated for Prize for Excluding Poverty from Welfare Care (Lier)

This year, Welfare Care is awarding the Poverty Exclusion Prize for the 25th time. This year they reward organizations that stand up for the rights of people who are homeless. Five organizations were nominated for the Poverty Exclusion Prize, including the Lierse Mondiale Works.

“Everyone has the right to a house and home. Homelessness is a gross violation of the right to housing. The problem is much bigger than people think, almost 20,000 people in Flanders have an unstable living situation,” explains Annelies Cardoen of Prijs Poverty Exclusion.

Mondiale Werken Regio Lier (MoWe) is a volunteer organization that has been supporting people in a vulnerable position since 2016. MoWe supports asylum seekers, refugees, homeless people and people without legal residence in the region between Antwerp and Mechelen. MoWe wants to stimulate support and create connections through 25 projects. “In 2022, they counted at least 4,036 beneficiaries. In 2023, they supported more than 500 families with housing assistance, of which 48 people or families were homeless,” says Cardoen.

On May 30, the Poverty Exclusion Prize will be presented by Hugo Beersmans, spokesperson for the Woonzaak at the KVS in Brussels. In addition to Mondiale Werken Lier, Betonne Jeugd and ‘t Vlot, the Oranjehuis from Kortrijk and the Brughuis from Leuven were also nominated. The laureate receives the bronze statue ‘The Relay for Life’ and €20,000 to invest in their own activities. (HB)
