In criminal cases involving traffic accidents, there is more than once misunderstanding about the penalty imposed. A person who causes a serious accident can be sentenced to community service. Is this right or wrong? We will investigate this at the Public Academy for the Judiciary on June 6.

Nine Trump As a public prosecutor in the Northern Netherlands, she had many traffic cases on her plate. She talks about how charged the hearings can be and how she arrived at certain sentencing requirements. How did she weigh the interests of victims or surviving relatives against those of suspects, who never wanted to cause an accident themselves?

Nynke Vellinga talks about the future of traffic as a researcher at the University of Groningen. What if self-driving cars start to determine the street scene and collide with an oncoming car, cyclist or pedestrian? Is the ‘driver’ responsible and if so, who is he? Is Dutch law ready for this development?

The evening will be led by Leonie Sinnema , reporter at Dagblad van het Noorden. After the lectures there will be time to ask questions. We do request that you keep the questions general. During the Public Academy there is no room to discuss personal issues.

The lectures are suitable for a wide audience. Knowledge of the law is not necessary to follow the lectures. Participation is free. The evening about traffic accidents is on June 6 at 7:30 PM in the Lokinzaal in the Röling building, Oude Boteringestraat 18 in Groningen.
