Marathon runner Eliud Kipchoge and his family are under threat. The Kenyan said this in an interview with the British channel BBC, which was broadcast on Tuesday. The two-time Olympic champion is accused via social media of having something to do with the death of his compatriot and competitor Kelvin Kiptum.
The accusations have given 39-year-old Kipchoge sleepless nights. “It is shocking that I am being linked to that boy’s death on social media.” According to the marathon runner, social media platforms are not doing enough to prevent abuse. He asks the platforms to take action. “People need to know that if they say something wrong, their account will be deleted.”

Kiptum, the current world record holder in the marathon, died in a car accident in his home country of Kenya in February at the age of 24. In October, he improved Kipchoge’s then world record by 34 seconds during the Chicago marathon. The record now stands at 2h00:35.
Kipchoge reacted with dismay to the death of his compatriot. He said he was “deeply sad”. The Kenyan wants to win gold again at the Olympic Games in Paris.
