21-year-old Faisal A. from The Hague was sentenced on Tuesday to a 20-hour training period and 60 days of community service. He was also given a conditional driving ban of two months. According to the judges, A. was guilty of dangerous driving when he hit a friend with his car in Lelystad on May 25, 2022.

It all happened in two seconds, A.’s lawyer said in court two weeks ago. After a few fun hours together, the former Lelystad resident had stayed in the car in the parking lot at the Stadspark when his friend had to pee. When he returned, A. locked the car doors to discourage him. He pressed the clutch and gave some gas as a joke, he told the police.

But at one point he accidentally released the clutch and the car lurched forward. His friend, who was happily jumping around the car, was hit and suffered a huge crash.

When A. heard the ambulance sirens approaching, he ran away in panic, leaving his friend seriously injured. “That was a stupid mistake, I feel bad that I left,” he told the court.

The victim was in bad condition. He had to undergo surgery, partly because he had fractures to his skull and his right ear canal. He will never be the same again.

The court’s sentence – which is according to juvenile criminal law – is almost entirely the same as the prosecutor’s demand. Only the driving ban was imposed conditionally, instead of unconditionally.
