The AMOLED display is fantastic, and the new hardware is nice and fast. Good optimization also ensures that the Galaxy A55 has an excellent battery life.

Furthermore, the Galaxy A55 is Samsung’s first phone to offer ‘seamless’ updates. New versions of the software are installed in the background. To use them, all you have to do is restart your phone. Furthermore, Samsung promises five years of updates – until spring 2029 – and four major Android upgrades – up to Android version 18.

More about the Galaxy A55

For years, Samsung’s Galaxy A5x phones have been among the best-selling smartphones on the market. The phones are a lot cheaper than the high-end Galaxy S models, but offer 90% of the functionality and quality.

This is no different with the Galaxy A55. Samsung has improved on the Galaxy A53 and A54 in several areas. The design is clearly even more inspired by the Galaxy S series. The Galaxy A55 has a front and back of Gorilla Glass Victus+. The metal frame feels cool and sturdy, and the body is of course IP67 water resistant.

Inside the Galaxy A55, the new Exynos 1480 processor does its work. That is by far the fastest processor that the South Koreans ever put in a mid-range phone. Especially graphically, the performance is much better than that of all previous models, thanks to the Xclipse 530 GPU that Samsung developed together with ARM.

But the device is not only fast. Unlike the Galaxy A53 and A54, the hardware and software of the Galaxy A55 have been excellently optimized right from launch. As a result, the device also has an excellent battery life.

Finally seamless updates

Naturally, with the Galaxy A55 you benefit from Samsung’s solid update policy. The device will receive security updates until spring 2029. In addition, you will receive four major Android upgrades in the coming years: to Android 15, 16, 17 and 18.

The Galaxy A55 is the first Samsung phone to support seamless updates. These are installed without you noticing – you can continue to use your phone. The new software will only be put into use after a restart. This makes the interruption in use much shorter.

In our Samsung Galaxy A55 review we concluded that the two main disadvantages are the front camera and the speakers. The front camera is now five years old and needs an upgrade. The stereo speakers are not bad, but not as good as the speakers in the A54.

It’s also a bit of a shame that the Galaxy A55 doesn’t have the Galaxy AI features that remain exclusive to the Galaxy S24 series.

Step up: Galaxy S23 FE

If you like the Galaxy A55, but perhaps want to take it a step further, check out the Galaxy S23 FE. That device has a comparable build quality and update policy, but the hardware is a lot faster. Moreover, it has a real telephoto camera with optical zoom.

The biggest bonus of the S23 FE, however, is that the device recently has Galaxy AI. The much-discussed AI gadgets are partly a nice gimmick, but partly also a really cool addition. And it looks like these will remain exclusive to the Galaxy S series for years to come.

The Galaxy A55 does have a clearly better battery life than the S23 FE. So if this is an important point for you, then you are in the right place with the A55.
