Any attempt to pursue “Taiwan independence” under any pretext or in any form will not succeed, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said on Thursday after reported leader-elect of Taiwan region Lai Ching-te said he hoped Taiwan would enhance cooperation with Japan following May 20th.

Lai also said at an event that a Taiwan contingency was a Japan contingency and a Japan contingency was a Taiwan contingency.

Some ill-minded people in Japan preached that “a Taiwan contingency is a Japan contingency”, which was clearly miscalculated, Lin told a daily news briefing.

Lin said that Democratic Progressive Party authority’s stirring up such rhetoric once again exposed their underlying logic of ingratiating itself with Japan, selling out Taiwan and soliciting external support to seek “Taiwan independence”.

It also reminds the world that “Taiwan independence” forces and external interference are the greatest destabilizing factors for peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, he added.

Lin stressed that adherence to the One-China principle is a widely recognized consensus of the international community and warned that any attempt to pursue “Taiwan independence” is doomed to failure.
