(ABM FN-Dow Jones) The number of new claims for unemployment benefits in the United States rose sharply in the week ending May 4. This emerged from figures from the US Department of Labor on Thursday.

The number of new applications for unemployment benefits amounted to 231,000, an increase of 22,000. The expectation was 214,000 applications.

Last week’s figure was increased by 1,000 to 209,000.

The four-week moving average was 215,000, an increase of 4,750.

The number of extended support applications in the week ending April 27 amounted to 1,785,000 applications, an increase of 17,000.
