The most expensive Netflix subscription comes to €18.99, which is even higher than the recently increased price of Viaplay (€17.99). Netflix thus gets the dubious honor of charging the highest price in the streaming world. The new prices have already taken effect for new subscribers, while existing subscribers will soon be notified of the price increase. Netflix’s basic subscription will become one euro more expensive and will rise to €8.99 per month. From now on you pay €13.99 for the standard subscription and the premium subscription will increase to €18.99 as indicated.

Below you can see the price increases in a table:

Subscription Number of screens Old price New price
Base 1 720p €7.99 €8.99
Standard 2 1080p €11.99 €13.99
Premium 4 4K €15.99 €18.99

You may be considering switching to the basic subscription, but this does have limitations. You can only watch on one screen at a time. Moreover, you get to see the films and series in 720p. Other major streaming services already increased their prices last year, but usually charge around ten euros per month. The last time Netflix implemented a price increase in the Netherlands was in 2021.

Netflix explains that it wants to invest in new TV series and films. In addition, the company wants to develop more functions. Other streaming services often mention that they need money to continue investing in good productions. As the number of competitors goes up and the amount of content increases exponentially, you might expect prices to go down. But the opposite is actually the case.

In Belgium, Neflix prices are also going up. the Basic subscription will cost €9.99 (€1 more expensive), while the Standard subscription will go to €14.99 per month and the Premium subscription to €19.99 per month. Belgian Netflix subscribers are therefore one euro per month more expensive than in the Netherlands.

Previous price increases of major streaming video services can be seen below:

Streaming service Old price New price
Amazon Prime Video €2.99 €4.99
Disney+ €9.99 €10.99
Apple TV+ €6.99 €9.99
Videoland Plus €8.99 €9.99
Videoland Premium €10.99 €11.99

More price increases are coming soon: Viaplay will go from €15.99 to €17.99 per month and at HBO Max the price will increase from €7.99 to €9.99. This means that the majority of streaming services remain around ten euros, with Netflix and Viaplay as the biggest outliers with prices approaching twenty euros. Viaplay is the service that probably needs extra money the most, due to the expensive Formula 1 broadcast rights.
