German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said on Thursday that Berlin is considering no longer supplying weapons to Israel. “This is currently being discussed,” the minister said in the German channel’s TV program Heute Journal ZDF.
The reason was US President Joe Biden’s statement that the United States will stop arms deliveries to Israel if it continues the siege of the city of Rafah in the Gaza Strip. When the host asked him if Pistorius understood the US government, the German defense minister replied, “Yes, I can understand that.”
Pistorius also said that the responsibility for any suspension of arms deliveries lies with the Chancellery and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The minister further told the TV program that it was crucial for Israel “to continue to focus on de-escalation.”
‘Israel will continue to fight even without US help’
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded to Biden’s statement for the first time on Thursday. Israel will resist “tooth and nail” even if it were to stand alone, the prime minister said in a video message. The Israeli Defense Forces have said there are sufficient ammunition and weapons for current and planned missions.
Israel says it is impossible to defeat Hamas without capturing Rafah. The US and Israel differ on this. “Destroying Rafah is not the way to achieve that goal,” said US National Security Adviser John Kirby.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is expected to present a report on Israel’s actions in Gaza on Friday.
This should show whether the country has complied with international laws of war and whether Israel has deliberately cut off the flow of aid. According to news site Axios it will be a critical report, but it will not state that Israel has crossed the line.
