Discussion meeting organized by the Amsterdam chapter of the International Socialists.

Pieter Nieuwland, Pieter Nieuwlandstraat 93, Amsterdam
On April 25, 1974, soldiers and officers of the Portuguese army brought an end to the Estado Novo dictatorship. This set in motion one of the most inspiring revolutionary processes of the 20th century; workers took control of their workplaces, community meetings flourished everywhere. Capitalists failed to put the genie back in the bottle and were forced to make huge concessions. The ruling classes outside Portugal feared that the revolutionary spirit would also spread further.
Join us for a discussion on the Portuguese Revolution with questions such as: What was the role of the decolonial uprisings in initiating the revolutionary process? How did workers reshape society? How did left-wing parties view the revolution? How was the revolution lost and what are the lessons for today?
Ewout van den Berg is editor at De Socialist, the newspaper of the International Socialists, and introduces this discussion.
