Thibau Nys achieved his second stage victory in a row in the Tour of Hungary on Saturday, and is now even more firmly in the yellow leader’s jersey. Afterwards he acknowledged that his teammates at Lidl-Trek had played a very important role.
After a difficult uphill sprint, Nys made it ahead of Swiss champion Marc Hirschi. “I don’t know if I’ve ever had this feeling in my legs,” the Brabander puffed out from the effort. “In the last 150 meters I was completely dying. I looked back and I saw Hirschi coming. (Blows) I was a little worried that he would still be about me, but I think we both had the same feeling.”
Lidl-Trek’s lead-out seemed to have played an important role in Nys’s second stage victory. “I can’t describe how much I want to thank my teammates. They did everything so, so well. Put me in the right position, gave me confidence. And I was able to finish it. I am only a small part in this victory. This victory belongs as much to the team as it does to me.”
“We went quite fast from the start of the climb, so we already pushed everyone to the limit. In an ideal scenario, my sprint would have actually been a little more explosive, but the run-up was so fast that I couldn’t accelerate any faster. And then it was still far to the finish. Very hard. Painful.”
The road season of cyclocross/road racer Nys only has 11 days of racing, but he has already collected three victories: a mountain stage in the Tour de Romandie for the WorldTour, and now two stages in the Tour of Hungary.
