Job program The block is back on TV after more than twelve years, at Net5. Viewers made themselves heard via X. The demolition of a monumental door was not well received. “Two couples smash out those antique ensuite stained glass doors with brute force. I already hate them.”

In the popular handyman program The block four couples enter into a renovation battle to deliver the best salable apartment. The team that ultimately manages to realize the most excess value will walk away with the main prize of 100,000 euros. They are assigned a dilapidated building, which they have to convert room by room into a brand new apartment, ready to be sold. They have to get to work with a limited budget and tight deadlines.

Het Blok back on TV

The format is the same, but this year presenter Dennis van der Geest will assist the candidates. In the first episode we met the four handyman couples: René and Jessica, Daniël and Sanne, Hans and Famke and Jair and Anouk. They will be working on renovating a building in the Amsterdam Rivierenbuurt over the next seven weeks. Not only do they have to do odd jobs, but they also have to sleep in the ruins, in bunk beds. There are several ex-couples, so that can lead to awkward situations. After all, odd jobs are also seen as the ultimate relationship test…

In the first episode, viewers saw how the handyman couples viewed the building. Fate determined which couple could renovate which floor, with a starting budget of 80,000 euros. Some couples worked very energetically and immediately rolled up their sleeves. So the two younger couples, Daniël and Sanne and Jair and Anouk, decided to demolish. They prefer a modern look and are completely done with the old elements.

Viewer comments

This leads to mixed reactions to X. For example, Jenni writes: “First episode of The block. Two couples knocking out antique ensuite stained glass doors with brute force. I already hate them.”

Mertine is also in shock. “No, they are demolishing the cupboards and sliding doors! What a destruction of capital. Know your buyer’s market.”

Patricia writes on X that participants Hans and Famke are her favorites. “Bring bottles of drinks and little clothing… because we wear job clothes anyway… And no beauty case.”

Another viewer gives up after one episode, she writes. “Is that building owned by The block first professionally demolished, damaged and polluted to start a bit of ‘fun’? That way, nothing will ever be delivered when you come in, right? Say hassle. Not much point in it anymore. Good luck and zapp.”

The block had competition from the popular housing program Buy Without Lookingwhich was also on the air on Monday evening.

Het Blok is presented by Dennis van der Geest and can be seen every weekday at 8:30 PM on Net5 from April 22. You can watch yesterday’s episode via KIJK.
