Six prisoners in New York have gone to court because they want to see the solar eclipse next week. The American state decided that all detainees must stay indoors during the natural phenomenon, but the six do not agree with this.

The six men are being held in a prison in Woodbourne. They believe that the state is depriving them of the right to practice their religion.

The plaintiffs are prisoners from different religious backgrounds. It concerns a Christian, a Muslim, a Protestant Baptist, an atheist and two followers of the African Santería.

It is important for Muslims to perform a special prayer during the solar eclipse. Followers of Santería make a spiritual sacrifice during the solar eclipse.

“A solar eclipse is a rare, natural phenomenon with great religious significance for many,” the complaint reads. “Watching the solar eclipse with the people I know here is a way for me to feel closer to God,” one of the men wrote.
