Floods in Tanzania have killed at least 155 people. Prime Minister Majaliwa says more than 200,000 people have fled. Persistent rainfall has led to increasing flooding in recent weeks, especially in the coastal region and the city of Dar es Salaam.

The rainy season in the African country is heavier this year, according to scientists because of the El Niño weather phenomenon. Roads, bridges and railways have been severely damaged and schools have been closed. The Prime Minister has called on residents to flee to higher ground.

A partnership of several aid organizations has started rescue operations in the affected area. They must also provide temporary shelter and stockpile emergency supplies for the approximately 51,000 people who have lost their homes.

Neighboring countries Burundi and Kenya have also been hit by flooding. At least 35 deaths have been reported in Kenya so far, and the number is feared to rise. Large amounts of rain are also expected in Tanzania and Kenya next week.
