Ricky van Wolfswinkel remains at FC Twente. The 35-year-old striker and club top scorer has extended his contract for a season.

FC Twente and Van Wolfswinkel had been in discussions for some time, and on the day that the club can secure third place at AZ, the news is confirmed. Van Wolfswinkel is adding a fourth season in Enschede. “Three years ago I joined FC Twente and I had one big goal: to enter Europe with FC Twente,” says Van Wolfswinkel. “In recent years we have built something very beautiful with pride, ambition and a good dose of common sense. Not only on the field, but also off it. The path we have taken is unique. I am unclean proud to be part of this and I will be there again next year.”

Always scored

Van Wolfswinkel has been playing for FC Twente since the summer of 2021. Before that, he played for Vitesse, FC Utrecht, Sporting, Norwich City, Saint-Étienne, Real Betis and FC Basel. Van Wolfswinkel has so far played 96 league matches, six cup matches and ten European matches for FC Twente. He scored a total of forty times. The two-time Dutch international recently scored his two hundredth goal in his professional career.

The attack leader

Before the winter break, Van Wolfswinkel was mainly the second striker behind Manfred Ugalde, but after the departure of the Costa Rican he is the undisputed attack leader of FC Twente. With fourteen goals he is also the club’s top scorer.

Van Wolfswinkel has currently played exactly as many games for FC Twente as he has for FC Basel, but on Sunday afternoon against AZ, FC Twente will be the club for which he has played his most official games (116).

Bruggink happy

Technical director Arnold Bruggink indicated a while ago that he was eager to continue with Van Wolfswinkel. “We are very happy that Ricky will also play for FC Twente next season,” he says. “Ricky has made a major contribution to the club’s performance in recent years and also plays a very positive role within the selection. Ricky proves in every training and in every match that he is top fit and has a great drive. A smart striker with a strong character. Next season, Ricky will once again be of great value to FC Twente in the Eredivisie and on the European stage.”

As is known, FC Twente is also in discussions with Wout Weghorst. The international, who plays for Hoffenheim but is under contract with Burnley, must provide the much-needed experience together with Van Wolfswinkel after the summer.
