Burkina Faso has once again blocked a number of foreign media outlets over their reporting on a Human Rights Watch report. That report accuses the government in the West African country of executions.
Since Sunday, broadcasts from the French television channel TV5MONDE can no longer be seen in Burkina Faso. The websites of, among others, the British newspaper TheGuardian, the French newspaper Le Monde and the African News Agency AP blocked.
The Burkinabe government blocks these media because of their reporting on a report by Human Rights Watch (HRW). It states that the army executed 223 villagers.
In 2022, the army seized power in Burkina Faso in a coup. The army vowed to tackle jihadist groups in the country.
According to witnesses, residents were arrested during these actions on suspicion of collaboration with jihadist militants. Then these civilians were rounded up and executed.
Last week, BBC Africa and the American international broadcaster Voice of America were already blocked in the African country. These broadcasters also reported on HRW’s report.
