NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg is angry with the member states. Ukraine has been without a chance in the war against Russia for months, he says. He mainly attributes this to political bickering over arms deliveries to Ukraine. “Ukraine has been without a chance for months, but it is not yet too late for Ukraine to win.” According to foreign commentator Bernard Hammelburg, it is a ‘rehearsed play’ by Stoltenberg, but ‘that does not make it any less important’.

Stoltenberg unexpectedly appeared at the side of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv, where he expressed fierce criticism. “The message was that as NATO boss he came to do penance and say that the member states had blundered,” Hammelburg summarizes. But, Stoltenberg also wanted to make it clear that it is not too late for Ukraine because more aid is coming soon.

‘The panels are moving in favor of Ukraine’

Hammelburg agrees that the West has blundered in its support for Ukraine, especially because the West tried to provide help as quickly as possible at the start of the war. However, this support has faltered in recent months due to political differences, which have resulted in additional arms deliveries being delayed in both the US and the EU. The result is therefore also visible, Hammelburg sees. “Everyone is watching Russia’s advance with fear and trembling.”

The fact that the need is now visible again is clearly visible in the United States, among other things, the foreign commentator notes. “The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, is a Trumpist. That’s why he was bothered. But he changed his mind after receiving a briefing from the CIA and military intelligence that shocked him so much.” He then allowed the vote on the support package for Ukraine. “The panels are shifting in favor of Ukraine,” Hammelburg concludes.
