Rogelio Villarreal didn’t know what he saw when he discovered the incredible opportunity on Instagram. Due to a typo, Cartier offered the gold and diamond earrings for 237 pesos (12 euros) on its website, where it should have been 237,000 pesos (12,000 euros).

Obvious mistake

Villarreal wasted no time and immediately ordered two sets of the jewelry. But Cartier had no intention of delivering and said it was obvious this was an error. The company tried to change Villarreal’s mind and abandon the purchase, including by offering a bottle of champagne and some accessories, but Villarreal did not agree.

That led to a months-long legal tug-of-war, in which Villarreal had the Mexican consumer authority behind it.

And that helped, because in the end Cartier chose his money and sent the jewelry to the Mexican buyer last week. According to the consumer authority, companies must adhere to the published prices. If they make a mistake, “it’s not the buyer’s fault.”

The boxes with the Cartier earrings that Villarreal received last week:

Villarreal, who has come under a lot of criticism in Mexico and has even been called a thief because he took advantage of an obvious mistake by Cartier, has given one set of earrings to his mother. “It feels great and it’s cool to not be the underdog for once in my life.”
