A German teenager has turned himself in after assaulting MEP Matthias Ecke. The police report that the suspect is a seventeen-year-old boy. His statement is being investigated.
Social Democrat Ecke was seriously injured in the assault on Friday. He was hanging up election posters in Dresden in the evening when he was attacked by four people.
The politician from the left-wing SPD party was taken to hospital and had to undergo surgery. Witnesses said the perpetrators were wearing dark clothing. It could possibly be an extreme right-wing group.
The teenager who came forward is said to have confessed that he knocked down Ecke. According to the police, it is still unclear who the other three perpetrators are.
The attack on 41-year-old Ecke led to great outrage, also outside Germany. Chancellor Olaf Scholz, a party colleague of Ecke, and prominent European politicians expressed their horror at the attack.
