A group of French bakers in the municipality of Suresnes set the world record for the longest baguette on Sunday. The loaf has grown to be 140 meters and 53 centimeters long.

When you think of baguettes, you quickly think of France. The French are known for taking their breads very seriously. An estimated 320 baguettes are sold in the country per second.

Yet it was Italy that won the world record for longest baguette in 2019. There, a group of bakers baked a loaf of almost 133 meters. In 2015, Italy also won the prize, after a group of bakers baked a 122-metre baguette.

So on Sunday it was up to a group of twelve French bakers in the commune of Suresnes, on the outskirts of Paris, to break the record. At 3 a.m. at night they started kneading, shaping and baking the bread.

About fourteen hours later it was officially declared that they had broken the record with a baguette of more than 140 meters long. After setting the record, the bread was distributed to the public and to homeless people living in the municipality.
