I believe that they can imagine such things. But Microsoft has one goal, making money. So the non-disable option will be continued. By the time a fine comes around, they will have raised more money.

The option should never, ever have been there. Not “can be switched off” or “opt-in/opt-out”, but definitely not. The addition only means one thing, for Microsoft you represent nothing more than a walking credit card/wallet. Which they may plunder at a time that suits them.

Microsoft has run a better PR campaign over the last 10 years than they did under Gates/Ballmer. And that’s the only difference, in all other areas they are still just as sneaky and hungry for your money as they were when Microsoft started.

Now that in itself is not so bad, after all, that is what it is a company for. But be honest about it, or at least don’t make it look much better than it is. In that respect you can say what you want about Oracle and IBM, they hardly hide behind sweet talk. You know what they do, you know what they can do and you know that you can dig deep into your pockets for it.

What was the idea behind Windows 11 again when it was first presented? It was supposed to be a “home” for you. Well, I don’t know what the situation is in your house, but in my house there is no advertising column that I have no control over. In my case, there isn’t even a single TV in the house anymore.

Now I want a phone too small to serve as an advertising column. So I just shout: advertising tile. And I carry this with me in my pocket in a cover. Use the thing mainly for 2FA and playing a word game before longer toilet visits. I don’t care about Instrgram, TikTok isn’t on it, Face Book, I don’t do anything with that either. I use WhatsApp regularly, which means sending a message about a birthday or something 2 or 3 times a week.

In the beginning I was really interested in social media, the thinking behind the first revisions was good. But that quickly derailed into “making money for every pop and sketch that every user puts on the internet through our network”, which I quickly got tired of. And for me it was an easy choice to do nothing with it at all. All the newer players, like Tik Tok and Instagram, immediately had the “make money off the backs of users” mentality, so no thanks.

Why am I explaining all this? To indicate that a telephone may be an advertising tile for you that you carry with you at all times. To me it is little more than an advertising stamp. I sometimes want to disable the ad blocker on my computers for some sites, so I am not completely ad-free.

So “home” in my case means: commercial-free. Microsoft now thinks very differently about this with its Windows product. And those with the opinion to “disable” or “opt-in/opt-out” only justify Microsoft’s bad behavior.
