The F1 Commission is meeting today to discuss, among other things, the possible new points system that – if approved – will be introduced from 2025. An important day for the future of the sport.

The current points system in Formula 1 was introduced in 2010, and awards the winner of the race 25 points. It then drops back to 18 points for P2, 15 points for P3, 12 points for P4, 10 points for P5, 8 points for P6, 6 points for P7, 4 points for P8, 2 points for P9 and 1 point for P10. Today you can also earn an extra point for the fastest race lap, provided you cross the line within the top ten. Changes to the points system are rare in Formula 1. Changes have only been made four times since 1990.

Points for the top twelve

However, another change may be on the horizon. Formula 1, the FIA and representatives of the ten participating teams will discuss a points system during a meeting of the F1 Commission today, in which the top twelve receive points, instead of the top ten. This is because the bottom ten teams (Sauber, Alpine, Williams, Haas, Visa RB) believe that if everyone finishes where they should finish, the first ten places are given to the top five teams (Aston Martin, Mercedes, McLaren) by default. , Ferrari, Red Bull Racing). Six of the ten teams must agree to the proposal.
