Zwolle – Do you know Gesina ter Borch? She was born in 1631 into an artist family in Zwolle and was the sister of painter Gerard ter Borch. While Gerard became world famous, Gesina remained more or less a secret for centuries. Nowadays Gesina would probably also have become an artist, but in her time this was forbidden for women. Fortunately, that did not stop Gesina, because during her lifetime she made a number of beautiful books full of beautiful handwritten poems and drawings.

Inspired by the story and art books of Gesina ter Borch, you can make your own book in this workshop. Together with museum teacher Myriam Keijzer you will work with beautiful paper, thread, needle, markers, stamps, buttons and ribbon and at the end of the workshop you will go home with your self-made book. Then you can start filling your book, just like Gesina. Maybe make it a family book, or let your friends write in it. Or are you going to draw in it? Everything is possible and allowed, of course. It’s sure to be beautiful!

Artist Jasper Abels will be a guest in the museum from April 21 to early September. At the request of ANNO, he responds with his work to five special ‘Zwolle stories’, including the story of Gesina ter Borch. Two original works by Gesina ter Borch are on display in the ANNO City Museum especially for the exhibition.
