AMERSFOORT Every month, Hans Loeve from Riemer bookstore discusses a book that stands out for various reasons. This time: The storage, by Yael van der Wouden.

“Van der Wouden speaks fluent Dutch, but she wrote this book in English, her native language. It was then translated and the book was published in Dutch well before the English version. And that has to do with the ‘battle’ for the rights, because everyone wanted to publish it. The book will be released this summer in thirteen countries. This is unique for a debut,” says Loeve.

EVA

“Once you have read the book you will understand why this is such a unique book. We meet Isabel: introverted, obsessive-compulsive, a pathetic pile of misery. She lives in a large house, occasionally sees her two brothers: Louis and Hendrik, but lives a withdrawn life. Louis has yet another girlfriend, Eva, and when he has to travel, he asks if Eva can stay with her. And then Eva’s intriguing, mysterious story unfolds. Isabel misbehaves towards Eva. Hate is expressed. Eva, in turn, remains kindness itself. As a reader you are on the edge of your seat. What is happening here? What’s behind this? The feeling of that built-up tension is further fueled when Isabel’s hatred turns 180 degrees and the two women come closer together. There appears to be intent in Eva’s love game.”

WAR

“The characters Eva and Isabel, curiosity and describing the characters of the supporting roles (Hendrik, Johan, Uncle Karel) so closely makes it a special book. Very slowly we discover that the basis for the entire story is war-related.”
