Disney and a district in the US state of Florida have reached a settlement in a lawsuit the company filed. The lawsuit was about who is in charge of the district where a Disney theme park is located.

Disney initially sued Governor Ron DeSantis and other Florida politicians for imposing additional measures on the company.

According to Disney, this happened in revenge, because the company spoke out against a law that DeSantis implemented. That law, nicknamed ‘don’t say gaylaw’, it banned teachers from talking about sexual orientation in schools. Disney argued that this violated the right to freedom of expression.

DeSantis stripped the Disney-controlled district of its special status. As a result, the company can no longer arrange matters such as police, fire brigade, road maintenance and development plans itself. DeSantis also threatened to build a prison at Disney World and place responsibility for controlling Disney roller coasters with the state of Florida. Other amusement parks would still be allowed to do that themselves.

Ultimately, the legal battle was mainly between Disney and the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District, the municipal authority that the Disney parks in Florida deal with. Disney and the district will now negotiate a local zoning plan. If Disney is satisfied with the outcome of the negotiations, it will likely drop the charges against DeSantis.
