The executive board of the House of Representatives wants to be able to punish MPs who violate the rules more severely. It is already possible to suspend MPs for a maximum of one month, but the board wants to expand the possibilities.

For example, there should be the option to conditionally suspend a Member of Parliament or temporarily refuse access to debates of a specific committee. The House still has to debate and vote on the board’s proposal.

The House of Representatives’ Integrity Investigation Board may propose to punish a Member of Parliament if he or she does not comply with the code of conduct. Such a punishment will only take effect if the majority of the House of Representatives agrees.

For example, at the end of last year, several MPs from Forum for Democracy were suspended. This happened because they refused to record all their secondary activities in the intended public register.

First instruction and reprimand

MPs often first receive an instruction before they are actually suspended. They will then receive an express request to adhere to the code of conduct, for example by stating that they must properly complete the register for additional positions.

It is common for a reprimand to follow afterwards. That is a disapproving letter from the executive board of the House of Representatives. The most serious measure is suspension. The possibilities for this are therefore being expanded.

The board of the House of Representatives approved the proposal on Wednesday morning. A spokesperson says that the proposal is separate from the threats from FVD leader Thierry Baudet to GroenLinks-PvdA MP Jesse Klaver.
