Windows 11 gets option to share links and files via QR code | Tweakers

Microsoft has added the ability to share links and cloud files via a QR code in a test version of Windows 11.

If Windows 11 users want to share a website link or cloud file, they will soon have the option to share it via a QR code. Microsoft announced this in a blog post in which the tech giant shares the new functions of test version 22635.3420. It is not clear when the feature will become available for the regular version of the operating system.

The QR code icon will be added to the operating system’s sharing menu. Users can access this via the Microsoft Edge browser and the OneDrive cloud service. Currently, if users want to share web pages or cloud files with others, they can do so by sending the link directly. The new option allows that link to be converted into a QR code. That code can be scanned with a camera application, for example on a telephone or laptop, after which users are automatically sent to the link.

This option can be useful if, for example, you want to send a link or file to someone close to you. The person then only has to scan the code on your screen, instead of having to send a link to that person’s email address. This should make the exchange of links and files between devices seamless, Microsoft says.

An earlier test version of Windows 11 already added an option to share WiFi passwords via a QR code. When users scan that code, they are automatically logged in to the WiFi network and therefore do not have to enter the password manually.
