Maarten Wijffels does not think much of the football supporters who set off fireworks. During PSV’s 0-8 victory over SC Heerenveen, the away section was ablaze, but also at Feyenoord in De Kuip, a torch or a smoke pot is regularly lit. The farewell match of Feyenoord coach Arne Slot will be completed without the boxes on the first ring on the north side.

Following fireworks in the semi-final of the KNVB Cup, the KNVB imposed a hefty penalty on the Rotterdam club. Feyenoord cannot appeal to a large part of the fanatic supporters in the last match of the season, against city rivals Excelsior. That was not all, because Feyenoord also received a fine of 15,000 euros from the Dutch football organization.

Wijffels has had clashes with football supporters before. The journalist is firmly convinced that fireworks do not belong in the stands. “Now we are entering dangerous territory again. Then I have to say something about supporters again, and last week I also had an argument with people on the Algemeen Dagblad.

“I’m just going to say something about it again, but this is unlikely,” Wijffels continues. “That the trainer then says goodbye, and then so-called people who find it necessary to wave torches then fine the club. And then such a farewell falls into the water, and why? Because they say: ‘yes, but without pyro there is no atmosphere’. No, you’re not a mood maker at all. You’re just ruining things for other people. What idiots!”
