We recently wrote about the salary you receive as a manager at Wibra. Of course we also immediately thought of that other discount store: Action. Does a job as a branch manager pay better there?
In 1993, Action opened its first branch in Enkhuizen, with more soon to follow. The store chain appears to be popular not only in the Netherlands. In addition to the Dutch branches, Action currently also has stores in Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Austria, Poland, the Czech Republic, Italy, Spain and Slovakia. Apparently all of Europe is crazy about all-in-one kitchen tools and Live Love Life signs covered in primer for 13 cents.

We currently find no fewer than 1,482 available jobs on the retail chain’s vacancy website. In 261 of those cases, Action is looking for an (assistant) manager. “With 150 new products every week, we challenge your creativity and entrepreneurship to the maximum. As captain of your team, you are responsible for the success of your store and your own career,” the store writes in the vacancy text.

Action does have a number of strict requirements. For example, the chain is looking for someone with a ‘completed MBO level 4 education or an HBO working and thinking level’. You also need at least five years of work experience in retail, of which at least two years in a managerial role. And, the text warns, ‘given our opening hours, you are fine with working regularly in the evenings and on weekends.’

But now the question: what do you get in return? “An attractive salary based on a 32 to 38-hour working week,” Action states. Pff, as a job seeker you can’t do anything with that, can you? Just be specific. Fortunately, we have the job website Glassdoor.nl that can give us a good estimate.

Based on nineteen stated salaries, the website states that as a manager at Action you should expect an annual salary between 27,000 euros and 39,000. This translates to a salary between 2,250 euros and 3,250 euros per month. If you are at the helm of a store with small prices, you will only receive a small salary. You are better off as a manager at McDonald’s.
