EnecoWith a hybrid heat pump you can save a lot of gas, up to 70 percent. Are you still unsure whether such a heat pump is suitable for your home? Expert Mik from Eneco answers six important questions about the hybrid heat pump.

A hybrid heat pump works together with your central heating boiler. The heat pump runs on electricity and extracts heat from the outside air or ventilation to heat your home. The boiler only takes over when the outside temperature drops below 4°C or when you need hot water. This means you use less gas.

Eneco has created a handy tool to see how much gas you can save. It’s called the GasSaving Bubble. You can view and inflate this bubble on your smartphone. It is calculated based on the available data for your home. This virtual bubble shows how much gas you can save with a hybrid heat pump.

Is my home suitable for a hybrid heat pump?

“Many homes are suitable for a hybrid heat pump,” says expert Mik. “This is because most homes already have a central heating boiler, which the heat pump can often easily be placed next to. A hybrid heat pump consists of an indoor and outdoor part. The indoor unit will hang next to your boiler. There is usually room for this, because the heat pump is approximately the same size as a central heating boiler. Some models are even smaller. Which means they often fit in terraced houses.”

You can place the outdoor part in different places: in your garden, on a flat roof, on an extension or on the facade. “It is important that it is not too close to your neighbors, so that they are not bothered by noise or vibrations,” says Mik. “The technicians think along about this.”

Is underfloor heating necessary?

“Underfloor heating is not necessary for a heat pump,” Mik explains. “A hybrid heat pump can also work well with radiators and provide significant savings on gas. Just like your central heating boiler, a heat pump heats the water that runs through the heating system to get your home to the right temperature.”

There is a difference. “A heat pump heats this water to about 45 or 55 degrees, while the central heating boiler heats the water to 60 or 80 degrees. A heat pump provides very stable, even heat. The advice is therefore to adjust your room temperature as little as possible. A heat pump needs a few hours to make your home one degree warmer.”

Does a hybrid heat pump make noise?

“People sometimes think that a heat pump makes a lot of noise, but that is not so bad,” says Mik. “To give an impression: between 58 and 62 decibels at full power is comparable to the sound of a dishwasher. And to be honest, a heat pump rarely works at full capacity,” he adds. “Moreover, a hybrid heat pump mainly works in the winter, when you usually don’t sit outside in your garden.”

Which energy label do I need?

Don’t worry if your home doesn’t have an energy label. In that case, a hybrid heat pump can still be a good choice. “In fact, especially if your home is not yet fully insulated, a hybrid heat pump is often a smart choice because the central heating boiler can step in when it is really cold,” says Mik.

“But it is important to have basic insulation, such as double glazing or cavity wall insulation. Otherwise, a heat pump will not have enough power to keep your home warm.”

How long does the installation take?

Installing a hybrid heat pump in your home usually does not take long. It was done in one or two days. “An engineer will first visit you, or he will video call you, to look at the options in your home. You will then hear where the technicians will be working during the installation. On the first day they install the indoor and outdoor parts. If necessary, they work in the meter cupboard on the second day.”

How much can I save?

Mik: “After installation you can immediately save up to 70 percent on gas. Electricity consumption increases, while gas consumption decreases much more. So you pay extra for electricity, but much less for gas. A hybrid heat pump is a simple step to heating more sustainably. You use less gas and your CO₂ emissions go down. So what are you waiting for?”
