From Monday, May 6, road users will drive through this connecting arch at the renovated Julianaplein intersection in Groningen.

The traffic arch for the route from Assen (A28) to Drachten (A7/N7) and Ring West (N370) is located in the (almost) green hill. This gives the busiest traffic intersection in the Northern Netherlands, an intersection with traffic lights for almost 60 years, a completely different appearance.

See more? Last week we made the videos below of another part of the ring road.

The three main routes at the A7/N7 and A28 junction will soon pass through and over them on a grade-separated basis. Road users can see in this video where they will be driving on Monday, when they ‘turn left’ from the A28 to the A7/N7 and no longer encounter anyone.

The last of 5 layers of asphalt and the markings will be applied over the weekend. Cars enter the tunnel on 2 lanes and exit on 1 to merge onto the A7/N7 at the Juliana Bridge above the Noord-Willemskanaal.

The heart of the junction

From Monday, motorists will drive through the heart of the junction, where the main road A7/N7 will soon pass over them and the route from Hoogezand to Assen will pass underneath. These routes will not open until September 2, when the longest tunnel of the project (Depressed Location) has been completed and connected to Julianaplein and Europaplein.

In recent years, road users drove through a temporary Julianaplein: a T-intersection with traffic lights. To convert this traffic situation into its final form, Operation Ring Zuid has been underway since March 23. The western part of the road was blocked for the first few weeks. The route from Drachten/Ring West to Assen opened on King’s Day and the opposite route will follow next Monday.

All routes across the square will be closed next weekend, except for the new road from Drachten to Assen.
