the nightmare of the Toyota Yaris

Get in from less than €23,000

The MG 3 Hybrid+ is the latest achievement in the Netherlands. As its name suggests, it is not an EV, but a hybrid hatchback. And an interesting one too. It is a direct competitor for cars such as the Dacia Sandero and Volkswagen Polo, but with a fully hybrid drivetrain.

MG already supplies a whole range of fully electric models in the Netherlands. The MG range also includes one plug-in hybrid: the EHS. MG now introduces the MG 3 Hybrid+. That is also not a fully electric model, but it is not a plug-in hybrid either. The MG 3 Hybrid+ has a full-fledged but plug-free hybrid powertrain. The MG 3 Hybrid+ comes to the Netherlands in three flavors and starts at €22,769. This makes it cheaper than the other car in this segment with a fully hybrid powertrain: the Toyota Yaris Hybrid. It is available from €26,050. That lower starting price is not its only asset.

MG 3 Hybrid+

The MG 3 Hybrid+ has a quite potent drivetrain. Where the Toyota Yaris Hybrid produces 116 hp for more than 26 grand and costs more than € 33,000 in 130 hp guise, the MG 3 Hybrid+ offers a system power of 192 hp for less than 23 grand. This comes from a 102 hp and 128 Nm strong 1.5 four-cylinder and a 136 hp and 250 Nm powerful electric motor. The MG completes the 0-100 sprint in 8 seconds. Its top speed: 170 km/h. There is a small 1.83 kWh battery under the back seat. The luggage compartment swallows 293 liters. This means he has to put up with the Sandero (328 liters) and the Polo (355 liters), but he beats the hybrid Yaris (286 liters). The average consumption of the MG 3 should be 4.4 l/100 km. However, here the MG loses out to Toyota’s more expensive alternative. The Yaris Hybrid has a combined consumption of 3.8 l/100 km.

MG supplies the MG 3 Hybrid+ as Standard, Comfort and Luxury. The starting price mentioned naturally applies to the Standard version. The MG 3 Hybrid+ has a 7-inch digital instrument cluster and an infotainment screen with a diagonal of 10.25 inches as standard. Navigation? Standard. As well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. More standard equipment: automatic climate control, rear parking sensors, a reversing camera, electrically operated windows front and rear, Lane Keep Assist and ‘intelligent’ cruise control. The Comfort version adds 16-inch alloys, electrically folding exterior mirrors, a start button, a more extensive audio system and air conditioning vents for the rear passengers. Top version Luxury tops off the MG 3 Hybrid+ with LED headlights, a 360-degree camera, heated seats, keyless entry, a more extensive package of passive and active safety systems and a heated steering wheel.
