Well-known businessman Arjen Terpstra (75) has filed for bankruptcy for Channel Distribution, a company that trades in gadgets, home furnishings and kitchen accessories.

There is a debt of about 200,000 euros, says curator Hilly Lunter. About half of this is claimed by the tax authorities.

Channel Distribution operates from a warehouse on the De Haven industrial estate in Drachten. Eight people work in logistics and commercial positions, among other things. The curator will have to give them notice of dismissal.

Container transport

Leeuwarder Terpstra no longer got the bills paid due to the high costs of container transport from China, Lunter understood from him. When a Russian supplier disappeared due to the sanctions, the turnips were completely cooked.

The founder of Channel Distribution was once a helmsman on the long sea. After studying philosophy, Terpstra started as a journalist at the age of thirty.

Klaas Jansma

Together with Klaas Jansma he founded the famous Persburo Penn, which he later exchanged for a career in trade. With his publishing company Columns, Terpstra made a lot of money in the 1990s by selling classical CDs in the drugstore chain Kruidvat.

A bankruptcy briefly threw that revenue model out of balance, but Terpstra managed to recover under the name Foreign Media Group. This production company with 130 employees achieved a turnover of 80 million euros more than twenty years ago. “I spoke to him this morning,” says curator Lunter. “He was a nice man.”
