Significantly more registrations in Donor Register after law change | Domestic

The number of people registrations has gone from 6.9 million in 2020 to 10.7 million in 2023. In addition, there have been more donations and organ and tissue transplants performed in recent years than before the change. Outgoing Minister for Medical Care Pia Dijkstra drew these conclusions on Thursday after an evaluation of the law.

Dijkstra is still careful: it is not certain that the number of donations has increased due to the change in the law. A new evaluation should reveal this in five years. The number of registrations is the result of this. “I am pleased that the number of people who have taken action to consider whether or not they want to be an organ donor has increased significantly,” she writes in a press release. According to her, that was “an important goal of this change in the law”.

Dijkstra does want to send a reminder letter to young people who turn 21 and are registered with ‘no objection’. The evaluation also shows that more than three million Dutch people have not recorded an active choice. She draws from previous research that young people often think it’s fine to be a donor, but forget to respond to government letters about this.

A total of 3 million adults have not yet completed the donor register themselves. Half of these have consciously chosen to leave the registration at ‘no objection’. The other half finds it difficult to make a choice, wants to think about it or wants to let relatives make a decision.
