The G7 countries have reached an agreement on closing coal-fired power stations by 2036. British Energy Minister Andrew Bowie confirmed this to the media in Turin, where the G7 countries are meeting for two days.
The G7 consists of the industrial powers United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Italy and France. Bowie called the agreement “historic”.
The meeting of the G7 is the first major political session since the world promised during the COP28 climate conference in December to eventually move away from coal, oil and gas. In the Netherlands, the highly polluting burning of coal for electricity will be banned in 2030.
The G7 is also expected to commit to reducing plastic production to tackle global pollution.
The coming together of the seven major countries caused unrest in the Italian city of Turin. Protesters believe that the G7 is not doing enough to achieve climate goals. The police took action against the demonstrators.
