Price development of product groups

In the quick estimate, CBS also announces the price development of a number of product groups in addition to the inflation figure. These product groups are aggregations of spending categories on a specific theme, such as all services. The price development for all categories in the CPI will be published on May 7.

New energy pricing method

CBS will use a new method to measure and process energy prices in the CPI from June 2023. At that time, CBS published a background article in which it explains in more detail what the switch means for the CPI, inflation and the use of the CPI for indexation purposes.

Quick estimate HICP

Statistics Netherlands publishes two different figures for inflation. One based on the consumer price index (CPI), and one based on the European harmonized consumer price index (HICP). The quick estimate of inflation in the Netherlands according to the HICP was 2.6 percent in April. In March inflation was 3.1 percent.

To compare inflation between countries, the member states of the European Union (EU) calculate a consumer price index according to internationally agreed definitions and methods. Eurostat calculates inflation for the eurozone and the European Union based on the HICP figures of all EU countries. The European Central Bank uses the HICP for monetary policy in the eurozone. In addition, most countries create their own national price index.

The main difference between the CPI and the HICP for the Netherlands is that the HICP, unlike the CPI, does not take into account the costs of living in your own home. In the CPI, these costs are calculated based on the development of residential rents. However, this is not the only difference. These differences are further explained in a publication.
