Albert Heijn is switching completely to white eggs for its own brand range. From the beginning of July, there will no longer be regular own-brand brown eggs on Albert Heijn supermarket shelves. The organic variants will also follow.

This is what a spokeswoman for Albert Heijn said. Currently, 80 percent of Albert Heijn’s own brand eggs are white. The switch to white eggs is part of Albert Heijn’s so-called Better for Nature & Farmer programme. Laying hen farmers have switched to white hens.

White eggs are more sustainable than brown eggs, because white hens use the feed more efficiently than brown ones and lay more eggs per hen. This results in fewer CO2 emissions and therefore a smaller environmental impact. This initiative contributes to Albert Heijn’s climate goals of emitting 45 percent fewer greenhouse gases by 2030 than in 2018.

Albert Heijn follows Lidl

Albert Heijn follows Lidl in this regard. The discounter has been selling only white eggs for some time. Lidl has been working with Kipster since 2017. Kipster’s three-star Better Life eggs have been on the shelves of the supermarket chain ever since. According to Lidl, laying hens that lay white eggs need less feed. This results in a lower environmental impact through the use of fewer raw materials.

In addition to Dutch supermarkets, more and more Belgian supermarkets are also focusing on the sale of white eggs. Since this autumn, most eggs on the shelves of Albert Heijn in Belgium have been white. Lidl Belgium is following this example and the proportion of white eggs is also growing at Jumbo Belgium. They choose this because white eggs are more sustainable than brown ones.
