Joost Klein (26) will board the plane on Monday with a good feeling on his way to Malmö, where he will represent the Netherlands in the Eurovision Song Contest next week. The artist is looking forward to it, he told the press upon departure. “I expect everything and nothing.”

“I let the whole adventure come to me”

“I let the whole adventure come to me,” said Joost. “I’ve been working on this for a year. I’m mainly just very curious and, above all, very hyped.” In recent weeks, Joost prepared himself in all kinds of ways. “Meditation, lots of air frying, training, abdominal exercises, swimming and lots of exercise,” he summed up. “I’ve sung the song 15,000 times,” he laughed.

“The dream was to one day be at the Eurovision Song Contest and in a few hours my dream has come true. Now that I say it out loud: I already achieved my goal during the rehearsal, so I don’t know whether I will go on this adventure finish it,” he joked.

Joost also asked singer Käärijä, who came second at the Eurovision Song Contest last year, for advice. “We went through my show many times and I really asked him: what do you think and what do you feel, even if you don’t understand a word of what I say. He had almost nothing to say,” said Joost. “We sparred a lot and he gave me a few ideas.”

Käärijä, who finished just behind winner Loreen in Liverpool with his hit ‘Cha Cha Cha’, not only watched Joost’s act, but also gave him tips on how to best get through the Eurovision Song Contest. “We talked about everything. I asked him what he did on certain things and what he thought before he stepped on stage. Did that provide any good tips? Definitely! He is part of the team!”

Joost also said that he was disappointed with the released rehearsal footage, because according to him it ‘ruined the joke’ a bit. “The Eurovision social media could be a bit better, that’s not quite my style,” says Joost. “So you can probably enjoy everything already.” Joost is referring to the photos and videos that are released from each rehearsal, even though they are private. He would have preferred if his act remained completely secret. “You’re not going to film rehearsals for a magician, are you?”

On Tuesday, Joost will take the stage for the first time in the Malmö Arena for his first private rehearsal. The second is on Friday and this is also behind closed doors. The Netherlands is in the second semi-final, which is next Thursday.
