Since it was announced that Joost Klein will be going to the Eurovision Song Contest, the whole of the Netherlands has known the cheerful and eccentric singer. Yet Joost did not have an easy childhood and a moving photo has emerged from that time.
Joost Klein lost his parents at an early age. When he was twelve years old, his father Johan died of cancer and shortly afterwards his mother Ella died of cardiac arrest. Joost is still having a hard time with the big loss. In 2018, he shared a snapshot from the old box showing him with his father.
Europapa
The number Europapa is, in addition to an ode to Europe, also an ode to his parents. At the end of the video clip, a family photo can be seen going up in smoke. That is a real photo of him and his parents, Joost recently said in conversation with Wiwibloggs. “It is a real photo of me and my parents when we were on holiday in Norway.”
Pride
When asked whether his parents would have been proud of him, Joost replied: “My father would have mainly laughed and said that I finally got my way. My mother would have been silently proud. And even if my father did laugh, it would be joking in a friendly way. I hope they are proud of me. And otherwise, it seems like there are many others who are proud of me!”
Eurovision songfestival
Joost has now left for Malmö for the Eurovision Song Contest and today he will be in action for the first time. At the end of the afternoon he will have half an hour for his song in the Malmö Arena Europapa and practice the accompanying act.
And although the rehearsal is behind closed doors, the Eurovision Song Contest organization distributes images via social media, which partly makes it clear what Joost is planning. The artist thinks that is a shame, he said yesterday at Schiphol. “You’re not going to film a magician’s rehearsals, are you?”
