Eurovision songfestival
Cornald Maas has been involved in the Eurovision Song Contest for more than twenty years, but that collaboration was not always smooth sailing. In the summer of 2010, Cornald was forced to leave the song festival. The organization did not support statements that Maas had made on Twitter. At the end of 2011, the commentator returned to the Eurovision Song Contest. Things didn’t go smoothly last year either and Cornald thought about leaving himself. In October 2023, Maas spoke in the NPO radio program Mischa! that he thought the commotion surrounding participants Mia Nicolai and Dion Cooper lasted too long.

‘It became such a situation and it lasted so long. It wasn’t over in a day or a week. An incredible number of untruths were debited. In consultation with AVROTROS, I did not respond to this so that the oil slick would not become bigger. That went against my character and my nature.’ The commentator seriously considered quitting. ‘But I have decided: it is too close to my heart. The construction is improving, there was less burden on my shoulders than before, the committee is getting bigger. Then you just have to accept that you are also a target.’

Cornald has been happy with his partner Martijn for more than twenty-seven years. The two have had a relationship for years, but decided in 2021 to move in together. “We are going to live together for the first time after 25 years,” Maas shared with Betty Asfalt, a cultural organization and theater from Amsterdam. “My mother would shout: ‘There is one thing you should never do, and that is live together!'” It is clear that the two did not listen to that advice.
